Oncologist Dr Anahita Pandole raised and addressed an issue that bothered many Mumbaiites: the proliferation of all kinds of hoardings that marred the city’s skyline and often created hazards for drivers. Pandole took her battle to the Bombay High Court first in 2002 and has consistently, since then, battled for a hoarding-free city. Her Public Interest Litigation of 2002 forced an official policy on hoardings and made the licensing framework stricter than it was.
She campaigned against hoarding advertisements in heritage precincts and Coastal Regulatory Zones – and won the fight. Pandole then extended her campaign to political hoardings, forcing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to declare a policy and levy penalties for violations.
